Site Back Up
For those of you that noticed, the site was down for a couple weeks. This was because my family was in the process of switching from AOL to Verizon. It was a good choice.
About the server, I now have (at least) 768 kbps of upstream bandwidth (compared to under 200 using AOL), meaning I can support at least 3 times the traffic!
Getting the server to work with Verizon’s Westell 6100 modem was a real PITA, though. I had to enable port forwarding, set up a static NAT, and do a some other pointless stuff in order for me to see it from behind the NAT. Nevertheless, it’s all working (and I’m glad Verizon is not filtering my port 80).
I also managed to network my entire house (my parents’ comp included), so we can all be happy. Everyone is behind two firewalls and a packet filter, plus the windows computer is loaded with security software. The only things left for me to do server-side is establish cups (printing) and nfs (file-sharing) servers (perhaps with some samba shares also) and make my server-side antivirus work (I’m planning on using clamav).
As I said, my server is up and I will be posting more soon, including a software project I’m currently working on (C++). Until then, have fun with what’s here! ![]()
