It’s been awhile — difficult to find Internet on an island :P

Okay, I’m in Athens now, at a very nice hotel that provided me with a power converter (America –> European) and Internet for my laptop — At the low, low cost of 12 Euro ($15.3066 USD). Anyway, I hate to bundle so many days into one post, but I think this is the most efficient way to do it.

  • A Little History Lesson First
  • Corfu (Greek Κέρκυρα) is a small sickle-shaped island west of the mainland of Greece. Originally inhabited by those who claim to be descendants of Odysseus (my aunt’s half-Corfian friend claims to be one also), the island has a very colorful history. It was “discovered” by the Europeans when Venetians began to live there. Napoleon also enjoyed the island and built an aristocratic palace, now home to high class restaurants as well as tacky tourist shops. The island’s history is reflected in the architecture, the art, the food, the speech (many slang phrases in Corfu come from Italian), and the general way of life of the Corfians.

  • The Roads
  • One thing I love about the Greeks is the way they drive, especially on the small Greek islands. Roads are typically one lane shared by both directions and occasionally crowded. This is especially true in Corfu Town, the main city on the island. Greeks drive fast, with no care towards the otehr drivers or pedestrians.

  • The Scenery
  • I would have images, but out camera is currently being fixed (the data is fine, but I have no way of connecting it without the camera — sorry Kevin!) so the best I can currently do is tell you what it’s like.

    Imagine an island with water and mountains right next to each other. Also imagine that there is some of the most beautiful greenery you’ve ever seen in your life. Olive trees, cyprus trees, flowers everywhere, magnificent beaches, hidden coves, 45 foot cliffs from which backflips are dangerous (trust me I know). The touristy parts of the island are not quite as beautiful, but still not bad.

  • What I Did
  • So you’re curious as to what my adventures were? They weren’t that impressive. Let’s see, I got drunk and jumped off a cliff, went partying at an Irish pub, and rode an ATV across the mountainous backroads. Nothing amazing, but still damn fun.

  • Και τώρα;
  • So where am I now? I spent the last couple of days in Athens, where we (my Aunt Mary, Uncle Vasilis, and brother Tim) all went on a train ride around the parthenon, went to the Hard Rock Cafe, and attended a Greek wedding and reception (the most festive wedding I’ve ever seen).

    I’ll have pictures as soon as our camera is fixed. My next post will be from Crete. :)

      Hey Dan,

      Mr.Stewart was on the paper today.
      He had a part on the FRONT PAGE! AND ITS THE SUNDAY PAPER too! and he had a big chunk on back page and a picture with his wife.

      It wasn’t a political article though, its about not having A/C and living in Florida.
      I would have save the paper for you, but my dad took the paper to work with him, I’m sorry.

      But I found it on internet:

      Awwwwwe, it didn’t work :(

      I dont know how to make link work in the comment.

      But you can copy and paste the link and put a real underscore on where it says “(underscore)”.

      @mary

      I see what happened… underscores are interpreted as the “em” tag. You should use the tag “a xhref=(websitename)” in side carats (sp?).
