Some Cool Site Updates
Some of you will have noticed that my site, mostly the comments, has been heavily modified. I spent some time on the WordPress Plugin Database looking at some toys/blogcandy to deck out my site. This is what I’ve found.
First of all, search. One toy I found was the Search Everything plugin, which, as the name implies, causes the search feature (down at the bottom, “Find the One” — I really need to make that easier to find) to literally search everything; posts, comments, pages whatever. I also found the vicinitySearch plugin, which expands my searches out to other blogs running a vicinitySearch server. If you are running one, please let me know so I can add you to my vicinity.
As far as comments go, here is a plugin I found to list the most commented posts (”Popular” in my sidebar). This little toy makes links in comments traceable by Google and other search bots. By default it doesn’t allow it. I’ve also added a method to preview your comments before you post. No more mistakes, please! Now, so we can laugh at all the people running IE on Windows, the Browser Detection plugin screams to the world what you were using when you posted your comment on my site!
I also wanted to encourage some competition. As you can see, each commenter has a number after his/her name, and the most active comment authors will be listed in the table. This is thanks to the Count Comments plugin. As long as you enter the same e-mail address each time (or register and login each time to comment, but that takes too much work), it will register that comment to your name. If you want me to update old comments to a new e-mail address, tell me so I can do it.
And of course, I’ve enabled the wpStats plugin, which logs stats (from today on) for my visitors, etc. Publically available stats are located on my stats page.
Please enjoy the updates, and I hope these little changes will make things more enjoyable for everyone!
